A measure of innovation performance: the Innovation Patent Index

Purpose The measure of companies' Innovation Performance is fundamental for enhancing the value and decision-making processes firms. purpose this paper to present a new Performance, called Patent Index (IPI), which makes it possible quantitatively summarize different aspects firms' innovation. Design/methodology/approach In order define IPI, secondary source, i.e. patent data, has been used. five dimensions efficiency, time, diversification, quality internationalization have defined both analyzing literature applying three machine learning algorithms (regularized least squares, deep neural networks decision trees), considering forward citations as proxy innovation performance. Findings Results show that IPI index very useful tool, simple use promptly. fact, get important results without making time consuming analysis with primary sources. It tool can be used by managers, businessmen, policymakers, organizations, experts financiers evaluate plan future activities, enhance capability, find financing support improve Research limitations/implications data are not widely in all sectors. Moreover, pure number only looking indicator suggested literature. Originality/value demand useable well lack tools able grasp innovation, highlight need develop instruments. although previous studies provide several measures these often difficult managers use, do appreciate looking.
